Thesis - Comparative Aeroacoustic Analysis of Rotating Axial Fans
Master Thesis
The scope of this master thesis is to investigate aeroacoustic noise emission from the case of a rotating axial fan with different available solvers, applying to the so-called hybrid Computational Aero-Acoustic (CAA) approach. At low Mach numbers, the acoustic and incompressible flow fields are decomposed, therefore allowing a separate simulation of the turbulent incompressible flow field, which deliver acoustic source terms, and the acoustic wave propagation.
If you are seeking an opportunity to combine theoretical and practical knowledge, while expanding your experience in the exciting field of aeroacoustics through the application of 3D Computational Aero-Acoustic (CAA) analysis, then this thesis is the perfect opportunity for you!
WHAT WE OFFER YOU:
The following tasks should be achieved within this master thesis:
- Literature research on the hybrid CAA approach and current methods.
- Implement the hybrid Computational Aero-Acoustic (CAA) approach, utilizing scale resolving approaches like Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) to deliver accurate acoustic source terms.
- Utilize Simcenter Star-CCM+ as the first commercially available software tool to implement the described workflow, including the hybrid simulation.
- Apply AVL FIRE M in combination with openCFS as the second software tool to simulate the incompressible turbulent flow field and acoustic wave propagation.
- Analyze and compare the obtained flow and acoustic results with relevant literature for validation purposes.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR:
- Programming skills in Python, C, Fortran for data analysis and post-processing tasks
- Experience with the 3D CFD simulation and meshing is beneficial
- Background knowledge in aerodynamics and acoustics recommended but not required
- Problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
- Proficient language skills in English or German
WHICH STUDY TRACKS WE PREFER:
You are successfully studying in a masters program (FH/UNI) in the field of:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- or similar
The successful completion of the thesis is remunerated with a one-time fee of EUR €3.500,00 before tax.
